The New Zealand Film Archive was established in 1981. In August 2014, The New Zealand Film Archive merged with Sound Archives Ngā Taonga Kōrero and the Television New Zealand Archive to form a new, integrated audiovisual archive. The new organisation is called the New Zealand Archive of Film, Television and Sound Ngā Taonga Whitiāhua Me Ngā Taonga Kōrero (known as Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision).

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision is New Zealand’s national sound and moving image archive. The archive is a charitable trust dedicated to collecting, protecting and connecting New Zealand’s audiovisual heritage with the widest possible audience.
